Abstract
This study explores perceptions of organizational communication within the workplace, using individuals in the work setting as subjects. Interviews were conducted to elicit descriptions of specific behaviors that were indicative of “competent” and “incompetent” behavior within the organization. The researcher hypothesized that the respondents would be able to articulate rules of the organization that guide their judgments concerning organizational communication competence. The data support this hypothesis. Interviewees did provide specific examples of rule-generated behavior in their discussions of competence.
