Abstract
Professor Nick Trujillo is a risk taker of no small distinction. He always has been and always will be. And he brings that remarkable scholarly spirit of risk taking to us today with his reflections on our freedoms as scholars. Nick has consistently drawn on his freedom to break the boundaries of our scholarly thinking, not for destruction but for expansion and growth. As he will say himself, the word eclectic characterizes Nick and his work rather well. That eclecticism marks for us an influential scholar who writes with heartfelt depth and clarity. As you engage Nick’s address, you will find him asking each of us, “Where does your heart take you in your scholarship?” and challenging us to embrace our scholarly freedom and use it well. As we move forward from today, we can get no better advice than to embrace our freedom to write from the heart.
