Effect of Stacking Structure on the Properties of Satin Laminated Composites

Abstract

Studies on the effect of stacking structure on the flexural and tensile properties of satin laminated composites were carried out. Satin, which is an asymmetrical pattern exhibits different face and back appearances. Hence the stacking of these two faces during the laminating process results in different stacking structures. Results of the mechanical testing clearly show that the flexural and tensile properties of satin laminated composites are dependent on the stacking structure of the laminate. As expected, there are differences in the results of tensile and flexural tests concerning the effect of different stacking structures of satin laminated composites. This is due to different loading and failure modes present in each testing method. The effect of hole damage on the properties of different stacking structures of satin laminated composite were also investigated. In general, the presence of holes significantly reduces the overall inherent properties of the woven composite system.
