Abstract
During 1997 the author facilitated a Socratic dialogue with ten girls and boys drawn from Years 8 and 10 at Hampstead School. All were elected members of the School Council, which from time to time reviews the school's rules and classroom code. She therefore suggested the topic 'Are Rules Necessary?' Most of this article is a report on the students' dialogue.
