Abstract
The Visser and Wright article presents a still-life picture of a dynamic situation Yet, the field of economic development is not static. It should be capable of developing itself. The role of professional organizations will be critical. Moreover, universities can be proactive partners in this effort, rather than reacting passively to current market demands. To do so, they must engage in a continuing dialogue with practicing professionals, make careful use of existing resources, keep marginal costs low, and work to overcome disciplinary boundaries. Auburn University's Economic Development Institute is working with faculty from four departments to create a graduate minor in economic development.
