2. In urban Brazil, formula supplements to breastfeeding babies more than quadrupled the risk of death from diarrhoea in the first year of life. Replacement of breastmilk by formula during the first two months led to risk of fatal diarrhoea 23 times that for the exclusively breastfed infant.
