Abstract
Eight women with clinical signs of staphylococcal mastitis were randomly divided in 2 groups. A solution of the bacteriocin nisin (6 µg/mL) was applied to the nipple and mammary areola of those assigned to the nisin group for 2 weeks, and a similar preparation devoid of nisin was applied to the control group. On day 0, staphylococcal counts in breast milk of the nisin and control groups were similar (5.04 ± 0.19 and 4.88 ± 0.21 log10 CFU/mL, respectively). However, on day 14, the mean in the nisin group (3.22 ± 0.43 log10 CFU/mL) was statistically lower than that of the control group (5.01 ± 0.21 log 10 CFU/mL). No clinical signs of mastitis were observed among the women of the nisin group on day 14, whereas they persisted throughout the study in the women of the control group. In conclusion, nisin seems to be an efficient alternative to antibiotics for the treatment of staphylococcal mastitis. J Hum Lact. 24(3):311-316.
Ocho mujeres con mastitis estafilocócica que no había mejorado tras un tratamiento previo con antibióticos fueron distribuidas, aleatoriamente, en dos grupos. Las del grupo “nisina” se aplicaron una solución de esta bacteriocina (6 µg/mL) en los pezones y areolas mamarias durante dos semanas mientras que las del grupo control se aplicaron una solución similar desprovista de nisina. En el día 0, las medias de los recuentos de estafilococos en leche fueron similares en los dos grupos (5.04 ± 0.19 y 4.88 ± 0.21 log10 UFC/mL, respectivamente). Sin embargo, en el día 14, la media del grupo nisina (3.22 ± 0.43 log 10 UFC/mL) fue estadísticamente inferior a la del grupo control (5.01 ± 0.21 log10 UFC/mL). En las mujeres del grupo nisina no se apreciaron síntomas clínicos de mastitis en el día 14 mientras que los síntomas persistieron en el otro grupo hasta el final del estudio. En conclusión, la preparación de nisina parece una alternativa eficaz a los antibióticos para el tratamiento de las mastitis estafilocócicas.
