Abstract
Gallaudet College has begun a new undergraduate program to prepare hearing impaired education majors to qualify for full certification to work with hearing children. The first group of majors recently completed an 8-week, full-time student teaching practicum in public schools; a combined attitude and opinion survey was administered before and after the experience to student teachers, cooperating teachers, principals, parents, and children to assess this experience. Survey data and observations demonstrated highly positive outcomes in both cognitive and affective areas, including several unexpected benefits for children. Recommendations were made for the organization and adaptation of preservice programs to prepare all handicapped pre-professionals for certification in regular education.
