The development of corrections policy is often complex and confusing. The authors argue that myths and symbols affect the policy making process in corrections, contributing to preservation of the status quo. Four prominent myths are discussed as examples of those which impact the process. The role of myths and symbols is discussed. The authors argue that constructive change is dependent on dispelling the myths which contribute to organizational status quo.
