Abstract
This study compares a new objective method for measuring texture retention in carpets to the usual subjective technique. The effect of mechanical wear on the texture of a range of nylon cut-pile carpets is examined using the image analysis techniques of covariance and co-occurrence analysis, and the results correlated with the subjective method.
The image analysis methods provide reliable measurements of the retention of carpet texture. Such a consistent and reliable instrumental method could play an important role in product design, performance evaluation and quality control in carpet manufacture.
