Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the readability of 112 commercial patterns acquired from a local fabric store. The objectives of the study were to ascertain (a) the range of readability of the pattern texts; (b) the average readability of the pattern envelopes, glossary texts, and guide sheet texts; (c) any significant differences among the three types of passages; and (d) the degree of consistency in readability among the passages. The passage instructions possessed wide ranges of readability. The average readability of the passages ranged from grade 5 for the guide sheet texts to grade 8 for the pattern envelopes. Significant differences existed among the means of the three passages, and there was little consistency in readability among the passages.
