Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the perceived information and assistance needs of New York State's small apparel and textile manufacturers. The study examined the sources of information and assistance utilized by these firms, the kinds of information and assistance (e.g. marketing, technology) which were most needed, and the potential for Cooperative Extension or other college-based programs to assist this sector. A state-wide mail and telephone survey of 850 firms provided general information on questions posed by the objectives. Personal and telephone interviews were conducted with owners from two specific industry segments throughout the state: apparel contractors and industrial fabricated product manufacturers. Marketing was identified as the most necessary type of assistance. Recommendations were made for the development, implementation, and marketing of programs to assist this important industrial sector.
