Abstract
Sponsored by the Winrock International Program1 in May 1996, I had an opportunity to teach, consult, and conduct preliminary research in Tajikistan, one of the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union in Central Asia.2 Using a reflexive perspective3 this paper details the logistics, negotiations and collaborations with emphasis on my teaching and consulting work plan prior to my assignment in the Textile Industry Program4 at the Technological University of Tajikistan in Dushanbe. These arrangements subsequently affected my teaching and consulting opportunities in other regions of Tajikistan and the preliminary research I conducted. This international opportunity reflects not only what is required of those who conduct international projects but as well suggests implications for textile and apparel scholars interested in designing similar development work related to their professional area of interests.
