Abstract
A decade ago they were referred to as "gold-collar." Today, the preferred term is "hot talent." Call them what you will, but the fact of the matter is these employees are in great demand and companies are doing whatever it takes to attract them. "These workers' technical know-how is as important to corporate performance as a star actor's charisma is to a movie's box-office success," says the author. In spite of companies' dramatic gestures of piling on bonuses, offering frequent salary increases, as well as a host of other special perks meant to attract them, companies are still literally "begging" for these workers. Interpreting the data from a special CBR hot talent survey completed in January 1999, the author explains: who is in demand and why the demand exists; how critical skills are being compensated by the firms that want and need their talents; and how other employees are reacting to these workers "hot" status.
