Abstract
Appropriate pay-for-performance dynamics are a linchpin of performance-contingent variable pay, ensuring that rewards truly motivate higher performance. The author advocates using a goal-based approach to clearly define performance expectations, thereby ensuring objective assessment of results. For this approach to succeed, however, the company must ensure that employee interests and business needs are closely aligned in order to create a win-win outcome for all stakeholders.
