Abstract
"I haven't seen the end of 'jobs' yet," the author says. "Most employees who are doing engineering work on Monday still do engineering work—not accounting or purchasing work-on Tuesday. I think what will happen is that there won't be the five or six levels of job for which many salary surveys now try to collect data. Perhaps we will see only jobs such as entry level, professional, and senior professional. We will probably always be able to categorize the work people do and differentiate the differences in the level of work (e.g., knowledge, accountability, and decision-making required). Since the need for determining salaries probably won't disappear either, we will continue to find ways to 'market-value' jobs."
