Abstract
Without missions, intranets deflate quickly. Information appears randomly and does not contribute to an organization's overall objectives. If security issues are not addressed early on, intellectual capital may be at risk. And without proper promotion, employees may soon forget that an intranet exists. These issues form a complex set of questions that organizations must consider in building an effective intranet. However, many organizations take a hands-off approach, relying on a "launch it and they will love it" philosophy. When an intranet's value withers, an organization loses time and wastes resources. Whether an organization is in the early stages of developing an intranet or providing a facelift to an existing one, starting with solid planning principles can help ensure an intranet's momentum and create value.
