Abstract
With steadily increasing health care costs and a continued emphasis on more strategic HR initiatives, the management of employee health and productivity is more important than ever before. It has become necessary to broaden the scope of integrated disability management (IDM) solutions of the past and move to a more encompassing organizational health view. This new approach will link employee health and productivity to the company bottom line. By understanding work-place drivers and markers of employee health, organizations will be better suited to design strategic solutions through employee benefits programs that tie directly to improved company profitability and, ultimately, employee satisfaction. In addressing the causes of absenteeism and helping employees get back to work more quickly, organizations that implement the right policies will realize a strong return on their investment. These policies include disease management, overall health initiatives and targeted intervention and support for extended absences. Employers must also examine indirect as well as direct costs and educate all levels of the management structure.
