Abstract
Unscheduled worker absences have a negative affect on a company's productivity, profits, competitiveness and employee satisfaction. To remain competitive, companies must work proactively to help workers remain healthy and satisfied at work. For many benefit managers, however, the prospect of altering programs, administrative practices or leave policies to manage unscheduled absences more effectively may seem to be an overwhelming, if not an impossible, task. Integrated disability management (IDM) programs can help provide the framework necessary to make strategic improvements. This article discusses how IDM can help employers achieve consistent administration of disability claims, convenience for customers, reduced paperwork for benefit managers and compliance with laws that govern leave policy.
