Abstract
This study examined the association between intimate partner violence, suicidal ideation, healthcare screenings about firearm access, and survivors’ feelings about perpetrators using a firearm against them. We conducted a nationally representative survey of 3,015 U.S. Black adults. Our sample included 1,585 Black adults in current relationships. Intimate partner abuse was associated with suicide ideation, being asked by a healthcare provider about firearm access, and survivors feeling nervous about perpetrators using firearms against them. Black adults in abusive relationships are at risk of self-harm by suicide and losing their life from firearm-related homicide.
