The aim of the exploratory study described in this article was to
develop and apply an instrument to measure differential treatment of
social service managers based on sex. Through a content analysis of
audiotapes, the differential use of modes of address, interruptions, and
time allocations and the use of exclusionary and negative language
were recorded. It was found that differential treatment based on sex
existed in the formal setting in which the instrument was tested and
that it was measurable.
