Glutamine supplementation has been researched extensively in the past decade. Many positive outcomes have been documented using supplemental glutamine in various disease states, including gastrointestinal disorders, immune function deficiencies, and metabolic stress states. Clinicians are interested in using oral/enteral glutamine supplementation instead of parenteral infusion due to production difficulties and costs associated with supplemented parenteral nutrition. This article provides practical guidelines for glutamine administration.
