Oral nutritional supplements are commonly used to reduce or prevent malnutrition-related morbidity and mortality in patients with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). In this review, nine prospective randomized clinical trials comparing a variety of oral nutritional supplements with or without nutrition counseling are critically evaluated, and recommendations for future investigations and current therapy are made.
