α,β-unsaturated derivatives of 2-methoxy-2H-3,4-dihydropyran were synthesized. Stereochemical considerations of these heterocycles are briefly discussed. These compounds undergo a rapid first order reaction with water to produce glutaraldehyde, a potent microbial sterilant. Copolymers derived from these compounds and HEMA were found to provide excellent ex amples of clear, hard-sanitizing films; presumably by reaction with at mospheric moisture. Microbiological assays indicate that the release rates of the active agent from the polymers vary greatly depending on the hydrophilic ity of the comonomers.

The reaction can also be run in solvent. It was noticed that the reaction rate was inversely proportional to the basicity of the solvent, which is probably due to the consumption of the acid catalyst by the solvent.

Calculations based on 200 mg of a poly 14/HEMA (1.5:1) film indicate that 73 mg or 36.5% by weight will ultimately become available as glutaraldehyde or 0.56 g/ft2, when coated on an 11 cm x 11 cm plate. It is of interest to note that when these films are deliberately wetted they become opaque, but when allowed to dry they become clear again.

This phenomenon will be reported on in more detail at a later date. Thus far some of our efforts in this area have clearly demonstrated that antimicrobial reductions are directly related to the pKa of the monomeric acid employed in the polymer. Acids with pKa ≤ 1 can provide rapid and virtually complete microbial population reductions.
