Abstract
Introduction
The purpose of this literature synthesis is to highlight some of the challenges faced by internationally educated nurses with English as a second language when integrating into the Canadian health-care environment and to suggest educational strategies that work to support these diverse learners to acculturate and fill gaps.
Results
Common themes in the literature include challenges relating to communication, cultural competence, and critical thinking.
Discussion
Some strategies that should be included in bridging education programs to address these challenges are evolving case studies, simulation and role-play, and practice performing multiple-choice tests. Research is needed examining the effectiveness of experiential techniques in preparing internationally educated nurses for nursing in the Canadian context.
