Abstract
This study evaluated the efficacy of a school based personal safety program in the primary grades. A total of 121 children in grades one and two were involved. Sixty-three participated in the program of six 30-minute lessons. Fifty-eight control children were not knowingly exposed to any parts of the program. A 24 item questionnaire was administered orally to each child individually and one-on-one role playing was videotaped to assess factual knowledge and behavioral skills in a pre/post design. The personal safety program was successful in imparting safety information to the children. Role playing of behavioral strategies resulted in change on the dependent measures in the expected direction.
