Abstract
Being able to express oneself through writing is important for demonstrating learning and knowledge. Unfortunately, recent studies reveal an increasing number of students at all levels of education who have difficulty communicating their know ledge, ideas, and beliefs through written language. Various researchers have revealed that planning is one of the main processes involved in written expression. It has been demonstrated that effective writers spend a good deal of time planning their work and that. improved composition rests upon improved planning. This article reviews current theoretical models and research in the field of written expression. It addresses the complex nature of writing and. suggests the need for an. integrative approach to the instruction. and assessment of written expression.
