The acceleration of the incidence of AIDS poses many questions for hospice and palliative care programs. Consideration must be given to many factors, such as active versus palliative treatment; timing of palliative involvement; regarding infection, the management of fear and anxiety and the protection of staff and other patients; the role of palliative care in the societal implications of the disease; decisions about the allocation of health care resources.
