Abstract
The Analysis of Poverty Spells. In this paper data of the longitudinal database of the Dutch Socio-economic Panel survey (SEP) are used to analyse poverty spells. Net household incomes are standardized by means of the Statistics Netherlands equivalence scale. The half median method (a relative poverty measure) is used to determine which persons should be considered poor. Cox's proportional hazards model is used to test the dependence of the poverty spell on a number of demographic, geographic and labour variables.
