Abstract
This article highlights legal procedures, rules, and concepts that will prepare the physician for the experience of offering expert testimony in a court of law. General and specific advice to the novice is offered. Many topics including marketing yourself as a provider of expert services through a broker, consultations, duties, responsibilities, and payment are discussed. Remaining a scientist and a neutral party towards the outcome of the specific case is emphasized. The various types of evidence are described. The experience of and motivation behind the impeachment of the expert witness and the Ad Hominem legal attack are explained. Ultimately, the expert should be prepared, knowledgeable and honest, objective, neutral, and disinterested.
