Abstract
Forewarning is forearming. This article offers emotional armor to the physician enduring a malpractice suit for the first time. The author explains the most common emotions that assail the physician when a subpoena is first served and offers several practical ideas for bringing some order into the initial stages of a malpractice suit. These include: notify the malpractice insurance carrier immediately; gather and review the complete medical record, looking for errors in medical judgement; make a copy of the record for your attorney; summarize events for your attorney, and request all hospital records.
