Abstract
In the lifetimes of many of us, essentially all of the developments of hair transplant surgery have occurred. Now, with the introduction of micro- or minigrafting, even the hairlines can be made to look natural or normal; and the various combinations of other techniques with these tiny grafts are providing the overall quality of excellence desired. The refusal to accept results short of perfection shows how specialism in hair transplant surgery has led to one improvement after another. Politicians, however, are trying to convince the public that generalists, not specialists, are what the public needs. If the specialists' side is to be told, we will have to tell it and promptly. Selected steps in the hair transplant saga, showing what our quest for excellence finally led to, will begin the telling of the cosmetic surgeons' story.
