Adipose tissue metabolism, its regulatory control mechanisms, and its overall relationship to health and disease have been the subject of intense study over the past decade. In this article the metabolic characteristics of adipose tissue are outlined, and the authors' preliminary data from in vitro studies are summarized. Recent findings regarding body fat topography and associated metabolic characteristics are reviewed, with possible implications relating to body contouring surgery.
