Abstract
Cosmetic surgery is a field that has mushroomed far beyond the mere existence that was seen less than 10 years ago. This change has come about for many reasons, including improved instruments, improved techniques, more thorough training of physicians, extended experience and a positive media exposure. Because of the spectacular growth and more competition, more demands have been placed on the surgeon to produce better results, to communicate more, to involve the patient in the planning, to devise methods to more efficiently analyze the features, and plan the surgery. With modern computer and video technology available to us it is natural to use these advances to aid us. Three methods of facial analysis are discussed. All methods involve the use of a computer to alter features. The author prefers the videotape to the computer method because it is the most effective, most flexible, and still allows excellent documentation and computerized alteration of facial profile as needed.
