Paris and Winograd (this issue) provided important information, much of it drawn from their own research, on self-appraisal, self-monitoring, motivation, and four instructional approaches to metacognitive instruction. In the present article, we discuss these topics with respect to special education research and practice. Specific challenges represented by these approaches are discussed, as are the implications of metacognitive instruction for special education.
