Abstract
Civic discourse has been weakened by the multiple, partial, and opinion-laden views of special interest groups. The contrast between discussion among citizens and the collections of personal opinion promoted in the media is an issue which needs more attention by adult educators than it now receives. A weakening focus on the common good has been replaced by the promotion of personal good. The education of citizens as advanced by the nation's founders has given way to preparing learners to meet the demands of the economic system. Suggestions in accord with future contexts are made to adult educators on how to recover earlier emphases on helping people become active and effective citizens.
