Abstract
Adult education in China today is utilized as an instrument for the consolidation and perpetuation of the Communist social revolu tion. Pursuant to the fundamental ideological, political, and eco nomic objectives of the Chinese government, considerable experi mentation is underway to devise more adaptive teaching-learning modes for adults. The major thrust is to create a largely informal, non-schooled, and de-centralized educational system coordinated with, but not necessarily dependent upon, formal institutionalized schools. Significant progress has been made in adapting curricula and instruction to the unique needs of mature learners with respect to fostering literacy, teaching occupational skills, and inculcating prevailing social norms. Further study is required to ascertain the possible applicability elsewhere of these recent Chinese educational innovations.
