This article examines advertisements placed in Savannah, Georgia, newspapers from 1765 through 1789 to identify and describe the nature of adult educational opportunities available through private venture schools. The advertisements reviewed indi cate that provisions for the education of adults were made by private venture schools during the period. These provisions in cluded a variety of leisure-related topics such as drawing, lan guage, music and self-defense.
