Abstract
This study presents the results of an investigation into the use of the cloze procedure using a group of adults with limited reading ability. Several segments of this problem were studied. The re search sought to test three types of cloze construction as predictors of a standardized reading test. The cloze procedure was also evalu ated in relation to several readability formulas in ranking seven prose passages. In addition, information was gathered on the opinions of cloze held by the population. Multiple regression analyses indicated that 1-5 cloze deletion was a significant pre dictor of a standardized reading test. A rank order correlation between the ranking of seven passages by cloze as compared with rankings using readability formulas was not significant. The results of the cloze opinion survey indicated a positive feeling toward the cloze procedure.
