Abstract
The fall 1989 mayoral election in New York City must be considered within the coniext of ethn1ic politics and the fact that New York City s minority popuilation now constitutes the political majority. Currently, Puerto Rican political leadershzip in tle city has waned atid there is no consisten1t sutpportfor Mayor Edward L. Koch. Thisfact, alonig with tile lack of black voter support for Mavor Koch, the greater ntimber of viable mayoral candidates than in previous electiois, and an increasing tendency for Puerto Ricans to move away from the Democrraiic party when voling, all suggest that the Puterto Rican/Latino vote cotuld be critical in the out come of the mayoral election. The election could be determined by how Mayor Koch and the other candidates appeal to the Puerto Rican/Latino communtty.
