“Smart bombs.” “Neutralized targets.” “Friendly fire.” The press amiably adopted the military's numbingly innocent terminology in reporting Desert Storm. In reporting from the Persian Gulf, the media forgot that war lurked behind the “conflict” and that no matter how you sanitize it, to “neutralize” an enemy is to kill him.
