Abstract
In 1987, plans were announced to merge the editorial staffs of the Raleigh Times and the News & Observer. This study of reactions by the two newspaper staffs both before and after the merger suggests some ways management can ease the transition. Last November, after the study was complete, the Raleigh Times ceased publication altogether.
