Abstract
Telephone surveys in a sample of Minnesota cities – ranging in types such as rural, regional center, urban and suburban – compared residents' newspaper reading with where they shop for food, services, recreation and other items. A variety of relationships was found, indicating people's use of the newspaper for shopping is associated with community change and development. This study suggests further investigation of the possible shifting role of newspapers in their markets.
