Abstract
Figures on the 80 remaining joint ownership, two-newspaper cities indicate the trend toward losing one of the papers will continue. The likelihood is that the afternoon newspaper, the circulation trailer in 56 such cities, will be merged into its morning big sister when the circulation gap between them increases. The author reviews previous studies which provide an overview of the demise pattern and an explanation of the financial realities which result in merger.
