Abstract
Perhaps more than any other phrase, “God Bless America” best represents America's civil religion. An example of its use in The New York Times from 1987 to 2008 found the phrase 1,787 times. Yet, the overwhelming tone of its use was patriotic/nationalistic, not religious.
