Abstract
The author presents a classroom observation scale (the PTCOS) designed to be used in the observation and recording of an individual student's behavior and the teacher's response to the behavior. Several advantages and uses of the scale are presented including the quantification of observed student behavior, supervision of student teachers and professional self-improvement. The author defines four simple behavior categories and presents step-by-step instructions in how to complete an observation using the scale. A completed sample form is provided and discussed. Inter-rater reliability for the scale was calculated to be 88.5%, based on total agreement by three observers-raters.
