Abstract
Many measures must be adopted to ensure the safety of building occupants from the effects of smoke and toxic gases. This paper examines the work of local authority fire prevention and building control officers to mitigate these problems by the use of the provisions of the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and the Building Regulations 1976.
The implications of proposals to amend the 1971 Act in line with suggestions contained in a Green Paper on the review of fire policy and the commitment of the Government to use appropriate standards for regulatory purposes is discussed.
