Abstract
The variations of the mode of downward burning zone spread along a cylin drical cellulosic material with oxygen concentration and cylinder diameter were examined. The experiments were conducted in an apparatus for oxygen index measurements. Two types of fuel, cardboard cylinder and filter paper cylinder, were examined. It was shown that at an appropriate oxygen concentration higher than that of air both steady flaming spread and steady smoldering spread occur along a cardboard cylinder. This bimodality of burning zone spread extended to wide oxygen concentrations. Similar bimodality was observed also for filter paper cylinder. The range of oxygen concentration for each spread mode changed with diameter. Based on the experimental results, the spread mode along cellulosic material was discussed.
