The review is focused on flame retardants known or believed by the authors to be in actual use or in serious development at the time of writing. Wherever possible, the information presented is supported by publications, conference papers, patents or product literature, and there was no intent to present proprietary information. Emphasis is on the main commodity polymers such as PET and PBT. An attempt is made to show the considerations which influence plastics compounders in the choice of flame retardant for each application.
