Abstract
This report will examine the development of the education and training regime in the United Kingdom for the waste management industry over the past 100 years and will focus on the delivery of professional education and training and the development of acceptable qualifications obtained at Further and Higher educational establishments. It will give an appraisal of the National Vocational Qualification System in the UK and explain how technical competence relates to that system. It will describe the formation, organization and operation of the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory Board (WAMITAB). It will also set out how technical competence for the operation of waste management facilities is encompassed in UK legislation. Finally it will discuss how education, training and qualifications can be developed internationally and the role that ISWA might play.
